I am a masters student and I am looking at introducing an energy monitoring and control product that would enable customers take control of their bills. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

For electricty, I use the Efergy wireless device. It give me a live readout of current consuption and daily, weekly and monthly totals

That Efergy device seems like a nice idea, although just reading you meter and plotting the data gives quite a good overview of who much improvement you're making day-to-day.
The nice thing about the Efergy unit (I don't have one) seems to be that it can help you find the devices that are taking the energy, and thus allow you to focus your efforts on the areas that could make the most difference.
However, simple common sense and experimentation has enabled me to cut energy usage by a factor of 2 over that last month, and the only tool I've used is to plot the data read from my gas and electric meters.
