About time we had a good forum that discusses all things about being green rather than just building related issues. we need to remember that our buildings are just part of the equation and fat lot of good it will be if we just tighten up our buildings a little without addressing the way in which we lead our lives. Consumerism is the key problem that we face and green building, in my opinion could easily just be another facet of that. Consumption with conscience so to speak.

I don't like it being called 'energy and lifestyle'...I think we focus too much on energy [production] and carbon as it is in this world - maybe a 'home and construction' (that's as bad a title, I am useless at these things...)

Make a better suggestion please then Matt. I guess at the very least these ought to be two separate categories. In dreaming them up I was thinking that our consumerist lifestyles consumed lots of energy. But on reflection it could be confusing.
What say we break it into two categories:
Lifestyle and consumer issues
Energy - reducing our demand

What hope do we have of saving the planet when the government are doing everything in their power to encourage all of us, especially those with the least money to keep borrowing and spending.
Listening to the news you could easily become convinced that it is our civic duty to keep spending if we want to survive. Just listen to some of the adverts that are running on commercial radio at the moment encouraging people to borrow money that frankly, in the short term at least, they will never be able to repay.
So yes lets have a thread on consumerism where we can lament please.
