Does anyone have any knowledge of regs/planning laws in France? I know that the mayor is a main player, but isn't there a basic standard of regulation or is it a case of chuck it up & hope for the best? I ask because I was out there in August and it was not a rewarding experience, the job was a farce in many ways, mainly due to the idiot whose job it was. The guy had no idea of regs or planning & just blundered on regardless. Is this the French way?-Does anyone know?

Don't know if I am too late with advice but here goes. We did a major conversion to a house in the Aube region.(Departmnet 10) The key was the change of use of a barn and grenier(loft)to living and sleeping accommodation. Talk to the mayor he/she will help. THe builder will advise as well, or should do. Planning permission is not so dissimilar to UK. You will need proper drawings from an architect or similar and one set of forms filled in quintriplicate. Watch out for the "tax fonciere" and "tax de habitation" atthe year end. They will get you for increased floor space.

If you look on Angloinfo Normandy you will get all the info you need re planning and building regs plus insurance cover needed.
