Funds sought to solar power an African village

Anaerobic Digestion sector continues to grow

Anaerobic digestion (AD) continues to lead growth in the UK organics recycling industry, according to the latest sector survey (ASORI), published by WRAP. The main non-agricultural source material for AD is food waste, including that from local authority collections.

Renewables now bigger than nuclear

Worldwide solar power potential now exceeds 100 gigawatts of electrical generating capacity, according to new industry figures released by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association. This is more than the overall rating of the whole UK power plant system (which totals about 85 GW), and represents an estimated saving of around 53 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

German village produces more energy than it uses

A small village in Germany is producing 3 times more energy than it uses which is perhaps not so surprising considering that Germany has won the Solar Decathlon competition (to produce energy positive solar houses) year after year.

Cumbria Council rejects nuclear waste plans

Government plans to undertake preliminary work on an underground storage dump for nuclear waste were rejected by Cumbria county council on Wednesday, adding a major roadblock to plans for a long term solution to the problem of nuclear waste, says The Guardian.
