Interested homeowners in York are being invited to find out how to make their properties more eco-friendly by residents who have already taken that step in the city’s first Open Eco Homes event.
|
|
On Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, a total of 14 homes in York will be opening their doors as part of the event, organised by nature and green living centre St Nicks.
The idea behind the scheme is to give residents the opportunity to find out how to turn their house into an energy efficient home from those who have done it. Some of the homes have employed more eco-refurbishment or green building measures than others but they all have experiences to share.
People can visit the home of a couple who have a cheap mid-terrace house in central York and turned it into an energy efficient A-rated property for less than ten per cent of its value.
Another one on the map is an almost-finished “Passivhaus” – a new house built so well that its heating requirements will be minimal.
Event co-ordinator Ivana Jakubkova said: “Come and take a closer look at draught-proofing, solar panels, low energy lighting, edible gardens and many other ways to make homes cosier and cheaper to run. Use the opportunity to ask questions and hear about the good and bad experiences from actual householders rather than sales people.”
The host homes are living demonstrations of energy saving measures and will be welcoming visitors for free.
Yorkshire Energy Partnership will provide independent advice on how to give your own home an eco makeover, and one lucky visitor will win a free energy assessment for their home.
For more information, opening times and a map of the homes, visit york.greenopenhomes.net or phone Ivana on 01904 411821.
The event is funded by the Green Open Homes network. The York event partners are Yorkshire Energy Partnership, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust and City of York Council.

This is an imperative education for home owners in this country. I think people are unaware or non believing in the fuel crisis the world will face over the next 50 years. With fossil fuel burning being phased out, nuclear power not an option due to uranium supply, wind and hydro power neither cost effective and energy return poor 70% of our housing stock needs upgrading.
