Affordable Passivhaus scheme wins an award |

A Norfolk Housing Association beat some very tough competition to win the prestigious Housing Excellence Awards, ‘Best New Affordable Housing Scheme’ category. The winning scheme at Fulmodeston in North Norfolk was completed in July 2013.

The awards were presented to Andrew Savage, Executive Partnerships Director and Ed Mumford-Smith, Head of Development at an awards ceremony held in Manchester last week.
The homes at Fulmodeston were built on land generously donated by local landowner, Delaval Astley. This low energy scheme was the first to be constructed to the high Passivhaus environmental standard in North Norfolk and provides much needed affordable housing in an area of acute housing need. Broadland Housing Association developed the scheme working in close partnership with both Fulmodeston Parish Council and North Norfolk District Council, which granted £300,000 to support the scheme.
The award winning design of these properties, created by ‘Mole Architects’, utilised a locally sourced selection of finished timber boards and brick and black clay pantiles, which are particular to North Norfolk. The cutting edge Passivhaus construction provides efficient energy consumption, keeping energy costs for residents low.
Andrew Savage commented, “We are delighted that this development has been recognised at a National level, it demonstrates that in Norfolk we are pushing the boundaries to create energy efficient homes of good design that meet local needs in our rural community.
Rhodri Oliver, North Norfolk District Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing, said, “Many congratulations to Broadland Housing Association. We are extremely pleased that this excellent scheme has won such a prestigious national award. The provision of high quality affordable housing in our communities is one of our top priorities. Last year the council delivered a record number of affordable homes for the district, the highest number in Norfolk, and we are determined to continue this good progress.”
Mole Architects’ Director, Meredith Bowles comments “Local landowner Delaval Astley donated the land on the proviso that the architecture was to be exceptional and the houses low energy. The whole team has worked hard to ensure this high ambition has been met. So often edge-of-village affordable housing is designed without thought to context. Our design combines passive solar design with North Norfolk vernacular.
