Thin but highly insulating walls for new classroom

Hertfordshire pupils are benefiting from top class arts facilities thanks to a new extension built using innovative products which deliver the required thermal performance with a reduced thickness compared with traditional construction methods
Thin but highly insulating walls for new classroom

The John Warner School gained academy status in 2011. For the school to maintain high quality provision for growing pupil numbers additional teaching space and facilities were required. Design and build contractors TJ Evers oversaw the construction of the new two storey extension, including two specialist arts rooms on the ground floor and a further six general teaching classrooms split between the ground and upper floor.

The Kingspan TEK® Building System and Kingspan Unidek Aero® were installed by Kingspan TEK® Delivery Partners, Lowfield Timber Frames, as part of the pitched roof and wall build-ups. The products delivered the required thermal performance with a reduced thickness compared with traditional construction methods, ensuring that teaching space was maximised within the extension. Ian O’Hanlon from TJ Evers’ design partners, WPP Architects, discussed the specification: “One of the main reasons these products were specified for the project was the high speed of installation they offer. This enabled a semi-weathertight and safe environment to be formed quickly, which allowed follow-on trades to start their work at an early stage in the project. The products also provided continuity of detailing for the thermal envelope and achieved improved quality control for airtightness at all intersections.”

The components are structural insulated panel’s (SIPs) which were pre-cut offsite to the project’s requirements by Lowfield Timber Frames, ensuring a smooth, predictable erection program with minimal site waste.

A continuous bead of silicone sealant was used to seal the joints of the panels which, in combination with the unique proprietary jointing system, allowed the extension to deliver air leakage rates significantly better than those required by the Building Regulations (England and Wales). In addition, their highly insulated cores enabled them to provide outstanding levels of thermal performance, and an additional layer of Kingspan Thermawall TW55 insulation was installed inside the building to further minimise heatloss.

Kingspan Unidek Aero® Roofing System panels also feature integrated structural timber ribs which virtually eliminate repeating thermal bridges by ensuring a continuous layer of insulation at panel joints. The System is available with a range of facing thicknesses allowing spans of up to 7 metres, and can be erected on virtually any wall construction provided the specific tolerances are met.
