The Rampartners are a collaborative self build group, with a plot opposite the ruins of Hastings Castle, for which there is full planning permission to build seven ‘eco’ houses. From many points of view, they are coming from a good place. The juxtaposition of modern methods of construction facing the ancient monument brings home the urgency of the sea change shift in contemporary building design.

On a site with a sea view and steeped in history, the Ramparts has evolved from a vision that aspires to ‘One Planet Living’. The principles of zero waste and zero carbon have permeated the project from the concept proposal stage. The snugly insulated terrace is south facing, and like William the Conqueror’s original castle will use a timber frame prefabricated off site. On site renewable energy production has been included, using sun, air, wood and wind to aim for the benchmark of zero carbon homes. Wherever possible, quality natural materials have been chosen, for example, by specifying Scandinavian type wooden exterior windows and doors. Pragmatic choices have also been made, for instance, by enhancing these with aluminium cladding for a longer life cycle and lower maintenance.

Ceri Walters, one of the members said ‘In embracing this ethos, we are reducing long term costs, future proofing ourselves and facing up to our responsibilities to the next generations.’ Their dream is to put together smart houses that don’t cost the earth. With no mark up or profit added on to the subcontracts, the end costs of the houses are about a third less than market price. They will also benefit from low bills and annual incomes to householders from government and power company incentives.

Rampartners are currently seeking additional members for the 4 house plots still available. Members that have already reserved the other three plots look forward to meeting their yet unknown neighbours. All the properties have 4 bedrooms, but adaptable internal layouts make them suitable for sharing and co-ownership too. They are trusting that whoever joins, on a first come, first served basis, will be right for the group. Neil Brown, the founding member added that ‘If you like the sound of this opportunity and a ‘New Way of Living’, please email me at neil@ramp101.co.uk or phone me on 07790131797. The project website is www.ramp101.co.uk Come home to your own castle. Secure your place in history today. Together, dreams do come true.’

What a fantastic development
I know the location and words cannot describe how wonderful the location is. Add to this the renewables and the fact you are only paying what it costs to build them, then this is a fantastic opportunity - I just wish I could afford one, I am so jealous of those that will!
