Ecos Homes was recently awarded ‘Best Housing Scheme’ by Regen South West for a development of five sustainable homes built to the Code Level 5 in Stawell, Somerset.
The 2008 South West Green Energy Awards were announced at a glittering awards' ceremony on Tuesday 25 November at the Bristol City Centre Marriot hotel. Regen SW holds the Awards to celebrate the achievements of individuals, community groups, renewable energy companies, housing developers, and local authorities in furthering the development of sustainable energy in South West England.
The Old Apple Store, Stawell is the first private sector housing development built to the Code Level 5 for sustainable homes in the country. ” We were delighted to win ‘Best Housing Scheme’ for our development at Stawell. This award sets us in good stead for future schemes throughout the South West” commented Ian Egerton, Marketing Manager, Ecos Homes.
Five dwellings were built on a brownfield site in Somerset and incorporate renewable energy and biomass technology. Onsite energy production is designed to generate 100% of the electricity demand for lighting, pumps, fans etc. and deliver a 100% improvement on the “dwelling emission rate” over a standard house. The properties offer superior insulation (including triple glazing) as well as maximising thermal mass, solar gain and natural light to reduce energy demand. All the homes harvest rainwater and have the latest water and energy saving appliances.
Ecos Homes managed the build in a joint venture with Rowena and Charles Graham. Local subcontractors were used and trained where necessary to allow the skills base to remain local. Technical tours and open days have been held throughout the build to inform national organisations and allow knowledge to permeate further afield.
Ecos aims to show that building at code 5 can be commercially viable, raising the bar within the development sector. Ecos Homes believe that ‘sustainable’ design and construction is better for the environment human health and social welfare.
