Community Groups awarded over £1 million in renewable energy grants

The third round of the Community Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP) capital grants scheme, which draws funds from the National Lottery, and is administered by BRE, saw the number of applications increase by 25%
Community Groups awarded over £1 million in renewable energy grants

Sixty-nine projects were assessed by the Selection Panel and 36 awarded funding totalling £770k.

Grants are open to not-for-profit community based organisations in England. There are two types of grant available: - Project Development Grants for studies investigating the feasibility of installing any combination of the microgeneration technologies listed below. The maximum grant available is £5,000 or 75 per cent of the study cost - whichever is lower.

Or Capital Grants which are available for the purchase and installation of any combination of the following technologies:

Solar photovoltaics
Solar thermal hot water
Wind turbines
Heat pumps
Automated wood pellet stoves
Wood fuelled boiler systems
Micro-hydro turbines.

Funding is also be available for energy efficiency measures, such as cavity wall and loft insulation in combination with the microgeneration technology. Where these are not already in place, organisations will have to install them in order to qualify for a microgeneration capital grant.

Funding is available for up to £50,000 or 50 per cent of the project cost (whichever is lower) for installing microgeneration technologies and energy efficiency measures.

The range of applications in the third round of the scheme was very diverse and included for the first time a lido and a guide association, as well as village halls, parish councils, schools and colleges.

£234K was also awarded to 103 organisations to undertake feasibility studies that will identify the most appropriate mix of measures for their buildings.

As the number of applications to the scheme rises, the competitive element of the fund increases and successful projects have to be of a high standard to be awarded funding.

For the next round of funding CSEP would like to encourage applications from the East Midlands, the North East, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber. These areas of the country are currently under-represented and their applications will be given priority.

To find out more about applying for funding, or to see the previously successful applicants can be found on the CSEP website http://www.communitysustainable.org.uk/
