Golf club gets one step greener A golf club in Cumbria has taken a step in the green direction with the installation of a biomass boiler. The new system burns wood pellets, which in turn powers the heating and hot water. Using wood fuel has a small but long-term beneficial effect on the environment, because the carbon in biomass is part of the natural carbon cycle, whilst the carbon in fossil fuels is not, permanently adding carbon to the environment when burned for fuel.

The new biomass boiler project was instigated by Windermere Golf Club Manager, Carol Slater and Club Treasurer, John Tiscornia, both of whom recognised a need to propel the club into a greener future. Installed in December, the bill for the first quarter has already shown considerable cost savings. As Chairman, Cliff Heath, explains, supporting the government’s drive towards a greener and more renewable energy is part of the golf club’s on-going approach to a more sustainable future.

“We are very pleased to have the biomass boiler now in place and are just one of three golf club’s in the County that have installed this system.” he said. “Cutting costs and doing our bit for the environment are an important and on-going consideration for the club. Alongside the new boiler, we have fully modernised the old plumbing system in the club house, enabling a quicker and more efficient system and will shortly be replacing the existing lighting with low energy LED lights.”
