The German city of Hamburg narrowly avoided disaster on May 1, when a freighter ship caught fire whilst moored at a wharf in the city centre. It later emerged that the vessel had several tons of radioactive material and explosives among its cargo.

A large proportion of tenants hit by the bedroom tax have so far failed to pay the resulting shortfall in their rent. Several of the UK’s largest housing associations have this week revealed thousands of tenants have not covered their rent since the controversial policy was introduced on 1 April. read more...

The innovative design of a new development in Nottingham means 18 of the houses, on the site of a former bowling club, can be 'snapped together' within two days of arriving on site. Nearly a third of councils are not complying with their legal duties on monitoring their buildings’ energy use under laws designed to encourage councils to improve their estates. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive from the EU requires public authorities to have up-to-date Display Energy Certificates (DEC) in all their buildings over 1,000m2. read more...

Mr Barker went on to say that he is forecasting over a million new installations by 2015 compared to the previous Labour Government target of 250,000, but he is living in a fantasy world if he really believes such a figure has any kind of foundation.” -

“While grey water recycling and rainwater harvesting systems can reduce domestic water consumption, they can also lead to increased energy use and carbon emissions. New homes built to current building regulations already deliver a much better level of water efficiency than existing homes. Therefore, from an overall perspective of saving water in a simple and affordable way, installing water meters in more existing homes would have a far greater impact on reducing overall consumption without these unintended consequences than additional measures in the relatively small number of new homes.” -
