End grain tiles - a new use for small native timber

A design specialist based in Wales has been appointed to lead an exciting project to develop a new flooring system that uses end grain tiles from sustainable hardwood or softwood in Powys, Wales. Dylan Jones, 39, from Caersws, will head up the two-and-a-half year Coed Cymru project that has secured funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and European Union under the Supply Chain Efficiency Scheme, which is part of the Rural Development Plan for Wales.

Sustainable Welsh timber building system wins awards

An innovative modular building system for affordable housing that uses sustainable Welsh wood has won five awards as it prepares for a major showcase in the United States. Ty Unnos (house built in one night), which began as a collaborative project by Coed Cymru, the Design Research Unit at the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) and Bangor University two years ago, has clinched the awards for innovation, sustainability and design.

Upton Cross Primary School in Liskeard, Cornwall, has installed Thermafleece PB20 as part of an ongoing strategy to harness green technologies and implement energy saving measures to make the building more efficient.
Thermafleece PB20 is the latest innovation from ecological insulation specialist Second Nature UK Ltd. This unique product sees wool from British mountain sheep blended with recycled polyester to create a sustainable insulating product that can be easily compressed and packaged into a tight roll without losing any thickness once unrolled.
