Apple Hayes, an environmentally-friendly five-bedroom house, has been nominated for regional finals by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The property is one of nine in Yorkshire to be shortlisted and if successful, will be considered for the ultimate prize in architecture, the RIBA Stirling Prize.

Designed by Ilkley architects Sense of Space, the detached house, on Ben Rhydding Drive, incorporates the latest insulation and heating technology to minimise its carbon footprint and running costs. Completed in 2010, it has already been praised by Ilkley Civic Society and meets the high Code Five standard for sustainable homes. It was built by Ilkley’s Landmarks (UK).

Sense of Space say they have noticed a recent shift in consumers’ attitudes in favour of low-carbon design, which has led to a number of environmentally-friendly homes, including low-energy houses in Harrogate, Silsden and Ilkley.

Director Iain Gibbons said they concentrated on a passive approach to technology. “We initially focus on the basic principles of orientation, insulation and solar gain before considering more active technologies such as solar panels and ground-source heat pumps.

“This maximises the benefits of free energy and this is the approach we have adopted at Apple Hayes,” he said.

Managing director Richard Addenbrook said they were delighted to be shortlisted alongside some of the leading architects in the country. The awards ceremony will take place at Manchester Town Hall.
