Harrogate pledge to cut CO2 by 40% |

Harrogate Council last night adopted a Climate Change Strategy which ultimately aims to cut the borough's carbon dioxide emissions by 40 per cent by 2020 - which has pleased campaigners Friends of the Earth, who have been campaigning for the council to get serious about CO2.

The strategy will set out how Harrogate Borough Council can reduce CO2 emissions from its own operations, and how the council can help residents reduce CO2 emissions.
The councils ultimate aim is to make a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions from its own operations by 2020 and an 80% reduction by 2050; and to help make a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions across the district as a whole by 2020 and an 80% reduction by 2050.
The first interim target is to make a 4% reduction in CO2 emissions resulting from the council’s own operations by 2011.
Four areas will be addressed - Energy Use – for example, improving energy efficiency in homes,businesses and in the council’s operations; promoting and using renewable and other low carbon energy sources.
Transport – for example, improving vehicle efficiency in the council’sfleet; promoting alternatives to private cars.
Purchasing – for example, using the council's purchasing power to adopt sustainable procurement principles within the council.
Raising awareness and changing attitudes – for example, working with schools and community groups; providing information to householders in both public and private sector housing; providing assistance for local businesses to cut carbon and raising awareness in the workplace.
Friends of the Earth's Yorkshire and Humber Campaign Co-ordinator Simon Bowens said:
"It's fantastic that Harrogate Council has agreed to do its bit in the fight against global warming. The Council's target to reduce emissions by 40 per cent by 2020 is spot on - the science shows that any less won't be enough to prevent dangerous climate change.
"People in Harrogate should soon feel the perks of the Council deciding to get serious about CO2 - because local action to cut emissions can create jobs, slash people's fuel bills and boost the economy."
