Green Leicester council development is a winner

A new green development in Leicester has won a major architecture award. Architects Maber took two awards at the regional Building Excellence Awards for their part in designing 146 new council houses in Leicester – the first to be built in 40 years.

The firm was awarded Best Social Housing Development and the prestigious Chairman's Award. Managing director Mark Hobson said: "We are thrilled to have had such a successful night, especially to win the Chairman's Award, which is the highest accolade of these awards.

"These two projects are so different, yet both have been recognised as outstanding, which is testament to our team's design quality and their versatility."

The development of 146 houses was built in partnership with Leicester City Council under the Local Authority New Build programme.

The Maber-designed council homes in Leicester, the first for four decades, have been built across five sites in the city, creating challenges for the architects, including the amount of space available, the varied topography and the need to connect with existing utilities.

They are the first council homes to be built in Leicester to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4, a medium level green building rating, which is the ideal for all new social housing in the run up to 2016, after which the nominal zero-carbon will be the target.

To meet the standard, because of varying conditions at different sites, Maber designed nine different house types with timber frame structures, photovoltaic and solar hot water panels, tight air permeability and a heat recovery system.

Some 30 properties have been built in Laburnum Road and Buddleia Close, Humberstone; nine in Calluna Road, off Heather Road, Knighton Fields; 23 in Birkenshaw Road, Connolly Close and Stenson Road, off Groby Road; and 49 off Wycombe Road, Humberstone.

There are about 8,500 people who are on the city's housing register.

The architects helped the council's housing department to win funding from the Government's Homes and Communities Agency, and the Maber design team worked closely with contractors Kier Partnership Homes.

Maber also won a prize for Best Education Development for a project at Nottingham University.
