Green supermarket will be a first for Wales

A retail giant has unveiled the details of its planned state-of-the-art store – and it’s a ‘first’ for Barry in south Wales. The store will be the first in Wales to meet top green standards.


The new Asda store, currently under construction at Barry Waterfront and due to open after Easter, will be the first in Wales to meet top environmental standards making it a leader among stores.

The retail giant is an integral part of the £230m Barry Waterfront Consortium scheme which will see around 2,000 dwellings, a primary school, and mixed retail units on the old Barry dockland.

A spokeswoman said: “As a major retailer, Asda has an important role in delivering sustainable and low carbon buildings and design teams are required to demonstrate sustainable buildings built in accordance with best practice performance expectations. The store has been awarded the highest BREEAM rating for retail developments, helping to make the wider Barry development a benchmark for other future sustainable developments.”

Designers have opted for high class architecture with the idea to make the anchor development a destination point for the community.

The store has been designed to sit well within the natural context of the waterfront, enhancing the surroundings whilst providing focal points within its architecture, including feature goal posts around the entrance, sustainably sourced timber cladding and large areas of glazing to provide active frontage.

Features of the food store include a large customer café which faces onto a carefully planned public realm area, designed to provide both green space and a meeting point for the public.

The public space and landscape has been designed to be robust and visually stimulating.

Landscaping design will feature wild flowers to encourage a greater diversity in both plant life, attract insects and provide habitation for small animals and birds.

The spokeswoman added: “The scale of the building has been considered to keep it proportional to the other proposed retail units within the wider master plan, and the store has been carefully positioned to maximise the routes of the public, with feature paving along the key desire lines linking it to the rest of the retail offers and beyond into the new residential area. As part of the new district centre within Barry, the site rationally connects with the other aspects of the scheme, providing visuals links through both the buildings architecture, and the links it affords.”

Eco-friendly construction materials, particularly the external cladding, roofing system and landscaping of the new Barry store will have a low environmental impact.

All packaging waste will be returned to distribution centres for recycling.

There will be local transport facilities and electric car charging points and ease of access and facilities for people of limited mobility.

Emissions will be reduced by reducing demand for energy and water, managing their use and investing in new technologies and energy efficient refrigeration systems have been installed.

Extensive use of roof-lights will reduce the need for artificial lighting, saving electricity, and automatic monitoring systems will manage energy and water use.

Photovoltaic technology will also provide electricity contributing to further reduction in CO² emissions. There will be heat reclaim on all refrigeration units to capture wasted energy and voltage optimisation units reduce the demand for grid electricity.

The company said it has taken every care to reduce the building’s impact on surrounding communities and environments arising from light-pollution, noise, flooding and emissions to air, land and water and the construction team has been working with an ecologist, to protect and enhance existing ecological features.
