A new green building could soon become South Yorkshire’s very own version of Grand Designs. Proposals to build ‘The Burrows’ - an earth-sheltered Passivhaus - on a site overlooking Stocksbridge from a ridge of high land near Green Moor have been granted planning permission.

The building will become the first of its type in the county. Designed by Paul Testa Architects, of Victor Street, Hillsborough, the ‘innovative, ultra low energy’ house will be take advantage of a sloping site.
The layout will shelter the accommodation from the north while providing fantastic views to the south.
Testa, aged 33, who studied at Sheffield University, said: “It is designed to minimise its visual and ecological impact on the site, the house combines references to the local vernacular, whilst retaining a contemporary outlook.
“I’m an active outdoor person with a passion for architecture and the built environment.
“I’m especially interested in the way buildings are procured and made, the nuts and bolts of the process and I’m passionate about making Sheffield an even better city in which to live.”
The house, which will be built by a local contractor, will be 95 per cent cheaper to run than a conventional home, Testa says.
Barnsley councillors, who considered the planning application, were so impressed with the design they gave permission for it to be built on a green belt site - something which only happens in exceptional circumstances when stringent conditions are met.
Construction is due to start early next year with the fully waterproofed and insulated property taking around a year to build.
And he envisages it will cost as around £250,000 to construct.
“Once constructed, the home will offer some of the best views you can get and will be very cheap to run. It will be a fantastic place to live but I won’t be living in it. Once the build is complete, my client will move in from a farm house where he presently lives just down the road.”
Testa says viewers could be seeing the story unfold on TV. He said: “I know my client has been talking to Channel 4 about the project, so you could see how things turn out on Grand Designs.”

Not all accurate but thanks for the article Thanks for the article. The project is set to be the first Passivhaus to be built in South Yorkshire. As has been pointed out, it will by no means be the first earth-sheltered house in Yorkshire, or the first earth-sheltered Passivhaus in the UK.

Misleading article This is certainly not the first earth shelter house in Yorkshire, the first was Underhill the home of Arthur Quarmby in Holmfirth West Yorkshire, there are others including my own " Way Under" in Denholme West Yorkshire. "Way Under" was also built in green belt.
