Armstrong Point at Wigan aims to provide a zero energy cost business park for the North West of England. The Carbon Consultancy Company recently carried out a feasibility study examining the potential use of renewable energy technologies in the scheme.

Possibly the first zero-energy cost industrial business park in the UK, the concept will result in substantial savings on energy costs for tenants through the use of a combination of state of the art green technologies.
Up to 9 high specification units will be provided, all of which will have an Energy Performance Certificate rating of A+ as well as being only one of a handful of developments in the world to boast a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) Outstanding rating.
The site represents an established manufacturing / industrial location with easy access to regional and national road networks. The park will create up to 70 new jobs on top of the 55 construction jobs while the site is being developed, providing a much needed boost to the Wigan economy.
The scheme will include a demonstration centre in one of the units, showcasing the range of low and zero carbon technologies available to commercial and domestic customers, which will include four different technologies – 90 kWh Solar PV, a 6kW wind turbine, nine solar thermal hot water systems and nine heat pumps. There will also be heat recovery ventilation systems, solar transpired heating and cooling, rainwater harvesting, and high levels of insulation. Lighting will be by daylight where possible and low energy LED otherwise.
