A new initiative spearheaded by Slough Council could help local householders knock £310 off annual energy bills. Every home in Slough is being offered the chance to save on annual energy bills, as part of a major new energy efficiency drive.

The ‘Insulate Slough’ scheme is open to all homes within the Slough district and, subject to survey, all eligible properties will be fitted with cavity wall and loft insulation for free. Alongside the scheme the local authority will continue to install insulation measures to its 6,500 social housing stock – a project expected to help lift hundreds more properties out of fuel poverty.
The installations are being carried out by national energy efficiency solutions company Anesco, which has worked on the council’s housing stock since 2011 to help the authority become a leader in low carbon energy. Work has already been completed on more than 300 measures within council properties. Installations to the remaining homes, where possible, are to be finished by December 2012.
Approximately one third of the heat within a property will escape through the roof if it is not properly insulated. Cavity wall insulation can bring energy savings of up to £135 a year, while loft insulation can reach a saving of up to £175 per household per annum.
The Property Services Team at Slough Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted to launch the Insulate Slough scheme, which will help tenants and residents make vital savings on their spiralling energy costs, while helping to reduce carbon emissions. Anesco has already introduced a number of green initiatives in the region including free solar power for schools, which has proven very successful. Each project takes us a step closer to our goal of making Slough a leader in the low carbon energy generation.”
Matthew Tunstall, head of energy efficiency at the company, said: “Slough Borough Council continues to break the mould. With this latest scheme it again proves its dedication to helping residents and the wider community achieve energy efficiency, through a blend of solutions. It is a great scheme that will benefit the whole community, including those struggling with fuel poverty, as well as regular households who are also facing continually rising fuel costs.”
Insulate Slough is the latest in a line of initiatives to be introduced by Slough Borough Council, as it works to reduce its carbon footprint. An earlier initiative has seen schools and other council buildings benefit from free electricity and reduced emissions, following the installation of free solar PV panels. Cippenham Infant School on Denis Way and Godolphin Infant School on Warrington Avenue were among the first to benefit.
Applications for the Insulate Slough scheme are now open. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2012. Homes must be situated within Slough to be eligible and each installation is subject to a suitability survey. To apply and for full terms and conditions call 0800 488 0112.
