One of the most environmentally friendly houses in the country was officially opened in Milton Keynes on Saturday. It was unveiled at the Park's Trust Little Green Fair at Hengistbury Lane in Tattenhoe which celebrated the building of Passive House, on the edge of Howe Park Wood.

The new house has been built to PassivHaus standard, the world’s leading standard for energy efficient construction. It will replace a derelict house formerly owned by the Homes and Communities Agency. It is the first house of its type to be built in Milton Keynes and one of only a handful in the UK.
The Trust’s ecologist has recommended that the parkland area between the existing property and Howe Park Wood be enhanced for wildlife including the restoration of the overgrown pond, wildflower meadow and the orchard. The Trust will also put up 24 bat boxes in then wood and install some amphibian friendly road kerbs so that newts can cross Hengistbury Lane more easily!
Typically the new energy efficient house will achieve an energy saving of 90% compared to the building of an ordinary house. The sustainable home aims to achieve zero carbon emissions through its PassivHaus construction, which incorporates high levels of insulation, photo voltaic panels, water conservation, heat recovery and ventilation and will hopefully attract a family interested in leading a more sustainable lifestyle.
Once the property has been built it will be rented and all income will be returned to The Parks Trust and reinvested into the parks of Milton Keynes.
The house has been designed by Ecodesign Consultants, architects and environmental consultants based in Bletchley
Tours of the house were held throughout the day. Chief Executive of The Parks Trust, David Foster, said: “The Little Green Fair provided a great opportunity to see inside the state of the art energy saving Passive House. The house will be privately rented and what’s so exciting for us is that all the income from it will be reinvested into caring for Milton Keynes’ parks.”
And Co-operative and Membership Officer for the South Midlands Area, Sabina Crouch, added: “We are proud to support the Green Fair in Milton Keynes, as sustainable living is so integral to The Co-operative Group’s values and plays a big part in many of our business decisions.
“There is a huge range of sustainable living initiatives across the region, from beekeeping to allotments and we are thrilled to help to raise awareness amongst local people on how small lifestyle changes can make a big environmental difference".
